Vacation Warning: Taking Medications on Holiday

Published by katieanne at 1:02 pm under GENERAL Edit This

If you have some kind of health condition that requires you to take medication you need to ensure:

  1. 1         That you have enough medication for your entire vacation with a couple of extra days supply in case of emergency.

  2. 2.        Split up the medication between your bags.  Always keep a couple of days supply in your hand luggage so that if your checked in luggage doesn’t quite make it to the same flight/destination as you, you’ve got a small supply to get you through until it turns up.  Make sure you also carry some in your hand luggage for your return travel so that if you encounter any delays you know you have medication to get you through until you’re reunited with your checked in bags.

  3. 3.         Make a written note of what medications you take, your doctor’s contact information, and anything you have that shows you require this medication in case you need to obtain some at your vacation destination.  If you’re going overseas, find out what name the medications are known in your destination country.

  4. 4.        Don’t take all of the medication you have with you if you won’t use it while away.  It’s good to have a supply ready waiting at home so you don’t have to go to the drugstore the morning after your arrival back from vacation.

  5. 5.        Wear medic alert bracelets or necklaces so that if you have an accident, or become ill on vacation the local first responders can see what existing health issues you have, and what medications you take.  This is especially important in cases of insulin and blood thinning meds.

Have you ever come across a need to carry prescriptions in order to take medications across borders? I’ve wondered about this, especially when a medicine is over-the-counter in one country, but prescription only in another.
